I painted Moonlight Swell in 2014, very much from my imagination. It is an expression of the turbulent time I was experiencing during its production.
It was a time when I only wanted to paint in black and white; colour was not an option in any of my paintings.
I just loved working on a black background and this painting just happened, using strong sweeps across the canvas.
It morphed into bright moonlight reflecting on the black turbulent sea picking up some sharp and strong movement of the water, while the moon’s reflection throws light upon the dark water.
It’s a favourite of many people.
